Martha Washington

Today we begin our first post in a series of presidential wives. And we'll start with the beginning.

For a long time, everyone assumed that George Washington married the widow Martha Custis for her money. As an up-and-coming military officer, Washington could hardly do better than marrying a 27 year old with a good inheritance.

However, based on new evidence, we find even more reason for George to have married Martha. The only suviving portrait of Martha shows her as an old woman. Forensic anthropologists have de-aged that portrait and have come up with this one. I think we can all now say "Nice one George".
